Why Do I Need a Savior and Lord?

God originally created us to live with Him in a perfect world. He not only created you, but He created all things.  It is His nature to create and to love.  But not everyone will receive His love and trust Him.  Many people do not know and understand that believing and trusting in God, will result in the best life possible.

God gave the same choice to the first man and woman (Adam and Eve).  They sinned, when they chose to determine for themselves what was right and wrong,  God warned them in advance, that the consequence of disobedience, would result in their death, (both physical and spiritual.)  Death and corruption not only affected their lives, it has negatively affected all living things ever since. God pronounced punishment over Satan when he tempted Adam and Eve to sin, as Satan will eventually be sent to hell for all eternity.  Although Satan currently has limited authority over the Earth, God maintains ultimate sovereignty. The demonic spirits are used both as a means to punish mankind for their evil ways, but also as a means to bring God honor and glory.  This happens when believers confront and overcome evil in faith and obedience to God, which results in doing good and applying His teachings and principles to their every day life.

When sin and death entered the world and corrupted it's perfection, man's relationship with God was broken.  Adam and Eve were no longer allowed to live with God, in a perfect place.  Because of sin, humanity is continually drawn to wrong ways of thinking and responding.   God knew that sin hindered mankind from the good life that He desired for them.  He understood that they were enslaved and held captive by sin. They needed a Rescuer.  God gave them the promise of a Savior Who would save them from their sins. God planned for Jesus to be the solution, long before Adam and Eve ever sinned.

Long ago, God selected certain people to know and do His will.   These people were called prophets. At that time, God intervened in earthly affairs, in order to bring about His promises of a Messiah. These prophecies were written down in ancient writings, which Christians today refer to as the Old Testament.  The Old Testament contains true accounts of God's relationship and purposes for humanity.  God gave specific details about the Messiah Who was to come.  Jesus was not conceived through the seed of sinful man, rather, He was to be born to a Jewish girl  (a virgin birth) conceived through the very Spirit of God!  As such, Jesus was not contaminated by the curse of sin, which was passed onto the descendants of the first man.  Jesus was God in human form!

Jesus Fulfilled all of the Old Testament Messianic prophecies.  The New Testament contains the accounts of His birth, life, death and resurrection.  It also contains stories of the early Christian church and its growth and influence in the world.  There are additional prophecies still to be fulfilled, which relate to Jesus's return to earth and the final judgement of the living and the dead.

Jesus lived the perfect life that no one could live and revealed Himself as the chosen Messiah.  He spoke with the authority of God, because He was God.  He was righteous in all of His ways but His words and ways revealed the sinfulness of man.  Those who loved God, loved Jesus.  Those who did not, were enraged by His righteous teachings and lifestyle.  He was not afraid to confront those who did wrong, including religious leaders, who used their positions for their own selfish purposes. These leaders were threatened by his popularity and falsely accused Him of wrong doing.  They plotted against him and had him arrested, beaten and crucified.  This too, did not come as a surprise to God, since it was for this reason that Jesus was born.  To testify to the goodness and truth of God and to rescue men from the power of sin and evil.

Jesus was the means God used to reconcile mankind to Himself.  Jesus did this by supernaturally taking all of humanities sins in his body, during the crucifixion.  As a result of His perfect sacrifice for sin, you are credited with Jesus's righteousness and perfection. This gift of salvation is available to anyone who places their faith and trust in Jesus.  This includes a commitment to repent from sin and a promise to live in obedience to God.  In exchange for faith and obedience to Jesus, all sin (past, present and future) will be forgiven and forgotten.  New believers can know how to live, as they follow the examples and teachings of Jesus, through His life and through the Bible.

Jesus came to live the perfect life that we could not. He demonstrated how to live a life pleasing to God. He performed numerous miracles, which confirmed His claim to be God.  Many of His disciples were martyred for their belief in Him, as the Messiah.  Jesus showed us how to conquer evil and hatred, when He loved, served and forgave His enemies.  He overcame death, by rising from the dead.  He appeared to multitudes of people after his death, confirming His resurrection and claims to be God.  After coming to faith in Jesus,  Believers are instructed to make a public declaration of their faith and to be baptized.  Baptism symbolizes a "dying" to the old way of living in sin, and a "resurrection" into the ways and purposes of God, as revealed through Jesus.

Jesus ascended into heaven, in order to prepare a place for those who will believe and trust in Him. His promises and salvation are for all people, young and old, rich and poor and for those from every nation, tribe and language.  He has promised to return to Earth and take all believers to be with Him in heaven.  Heaven is a perfect world without evil.  He will also judge the living and the dead.  People often accuse God of sending people to hell. That is so untrue!  Those who choose to live without Him in this life, can expect to live without Him in the next.  The choice each person makes in this life about God, is the same choice God honors and makes permanent upon each person's death.  Those who choose to live without God now, will live without Him later.
